Smart Lighting for a Maritime Operations Facility
Our team delivered a full modernisation of a large‑scale port lighting infrastructure, replacing ageing high‑pressure sodium systems with high‑efficiency LED luminaires integrated through a DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) control network. The upgrade enhances operational visibility, energy efficiency, and system reliability across multiple 30–40m lighting towers.
At the core of the solution is a Siemens PLC‑based control architecture, incorporating dual‑network DALI modules to intelligently manage up to 64 nodes per network. Each luminaire features multiple independently controlled LED drivers, allowing fine‑tuned brightness control from 0–100% and precise LUX‑based adjustment.
The PLC web server interface enables monitoring and diagnostics. Operators can access mode control (Automatic, Manual On/Off, Security Mode), real‑time ambient light readings, DALI device configuration pages, and advanced troubleshooting tools such as DALI bus diagnostics and group/scene management.
The system uses a closed‑loop lighting algorithm driven by high‑accuracy light sensors, automatically adjusting output to maintain safe illumination levels while minimising energy consumption. Intelligent ramping sequences prevent inrush currents, extend equipment lifespan, and eliminate strobing.
