Remote Water Treatment Facility

We delivered a complete operational technology (OT) upgrade for a remote Water Treatment Plant, modernising its automation, safety, and monitoring capabilities to ensure resilient drinking water production for a growing community. The project involved replacing legacy controls with a fully integrated Siemens‑based automation architecture, including S7‑1500 PLCs, ET200SP remote I/O, WinCC Unified SCADA, and hardened SCALANCE industrial networking components.

Designed to support 24/7 operation, the new system provides high‑availability control of the plant’s multi‑barrier treatment process, encompassing raw water extraction, chemical dosing, coagulation/flocculation, lamella clarification, dual‑media filtration, UV disinfection, chlorine gas dosing and all associated chemical storage, sludge handling and waste systems.

The solution incorporates a segregated VLAN network structure, secure remote access through SINEMA RC and industrial 4G connectivity, and a dedicated Siemens SINEC Security Monitor intrusion detection system—ensuring cybersecurity best practice for critical infrastructure.

Automated sequencing, duty/standby rotation, PID control loops, intelligent chemical dosing, automatic filter backwash, and coordinated UV warm‑up logic are all managed centrally through the unified SCADA system. Local HMIs provide plant‑floor visibility and control, enabling safe autonomous operation even if SCADA is offline.

By combining robust industrial automation, real‑time water quality analytics, comprehensive alarm/event management, and scalable virtualised compute infrastructure, the upgraded system delivers a modern, resilient, operator‑friendly control environment tailored for remote communities with limited onsite resources.
